Founded in 1957 as "Archiv für Tierzucht", the journal publishes original research papers, short communications, brief reports and reviews by international scientists on the topic of farm animal sciences in the English language.

The switch of “Archives Animal Breeding” to the open access publication model was made in 2013. Since then all articles have been available free of charge under a creative common license (CC-BY 3.0/4.0).
"Archives Animal Breeding" is published by the renowned Copernicus Publications open-access publisher since 2015. This allows high-quality information about current developments in farm animal sciences to reach the specialist audience even more quickly.
All articles for as long as the journal has existed go through a consistent assessment by at least two experts (peer review process). As a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) "Archives Animal Breeding" has obligated itself to maintain high scientific publication standards and was recognised for these efforts with the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) seal.
"Archives Animal Breeding" is extensively indexed (including DOAJ, CAB Abstracts, Google Scolar, Pub Med Central, SCI, Scopus) and has a journal impact factor important for bibliometric comparisons.
