Open-access journal for livestock sciences

Archives Animal Breeding is an international, English-language journal specialising in livestock biology. It was founded in 1957 as the ‘Archiv für Tierzucht’ and publishes original research papers and review articles. Key topics include quantitative and functional genetics, genetic diversity, animal nutrition, animal behaviour, husbandry and animal welfare, physiology, product quality and reproduction.

Open Access and publication costs

Since 2013, the journal has been published entirely as Open Access; since 2015, it has been published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN). Current articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence and are freely accessible worldwide.
Authors bear the publication costs for the first six pages. Additional pages are funded by the FBN. In the absence of funding, a partial or full waiver of fees may be requested prior to submission.

Peer review and scientific quality

All manuscripts undergo a single-blind peer-review process involving at least two independent reviews. *Archives Animal Breeding* is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and adheres to standards of scientific integrity. The scientific editorial board comprises researchers from the FBN and the University of Rostock.

International visibility

The journal is indexed in, amongst others, the Science Citation Index Expanded, Scopus, PubMed Central, CAB Abstracts, DOAJ and Google Scholar. For 2025, the journal’s website lists a CiteScore of 3.2, a Journal Impact Factor of 1.9 and a SNIP of 0.80.
