Project

ILLUMIAQUA - Light quality and light regime for the safe production of robust salmon and rainbow trout

Contact: Dr. rer. nat. Alexander Rebl

Duration: 2025-2028

Funding: Nofima AS

Abstract:

The project ILLUMIAQUA will (a) develop a strategy to utilise light in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout aquaculture to improve animal welfare, reduce losses and increase production efficiency, (b) gain fundamental knowledge about the light environment and the light sensitivity of salmonids, and (c) close specific knowledge gaps in the applied photobiology of salmonids. The primary objective of IllumiAqua is to provide best practice guidance for the use of illumination (irradiance, spectral quality and photoperiod) in the production of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout aligned to their biology at a given developmental stage in the production cycle.
