Innovations for healthy an "happy" cows (IGG)

Contact: Prof. Dr. Lisa Bachmann

Duration: 2021-2021

Funding: Bundesanstalt für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (FKZ: 28N303901)

Abstract:
The "IGG" innovation network, which focuses in particular on the animal, physiological essentials, animal behavior, sensory perception and the housing environment, develops solutions that clearly prioritize the welfare of dairy cattle. The "dairy barns of the future", planned as experimental and demonstration barns at Dummerstorf and Grub, were finally accepted by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in December 2021. These barns will help to answer innovative research questions on animal welfare and support the development of "dairy barns of the future" in present livestock production. The project will thus significantly improve animal welfare in dairy farming, reduce its impact on the environment, advance farm profitability and improve the supply of sustainably produced animal products to consumers.
