New ProFerkel research project: Focus on animal health in organic piglet rearing

|   News

The three-year ProFerkel research project was launched in October 2024. The aim of the project is to improve the health and well-being of piglets in organic rearing and reduce piglet losses. Research teams will collect extensive data from practice and analyze the main risk factors.

Among other things, the effects of environmental factors such as stable construction and husbandry systems, farm organization and the genetics of the breeding animals are being investigated. In addition, research is being carried out into how measures such as an adequate iron supply, vaccination programs, hygiene standards or targeted feeding can influence animal health. The knowledge gained is to be incorporated into concrete recommendations for practical operations.

In addition to the FBN, the Öko-Beratungsgesellschaft mbH, Bioland Beratung GmbH and Naturland e.V. are involved as project partners.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) as part of the Federal Organic Farming Program (BÖL). ProFerkel is part of the BMEL announcement “Improvement and further development of sustainable production systems in organic pig farming”. With this initiative, the Ministry aims to strengthen animal health and sustainability in organic pig farming and to further develop production and marketing in this area.
