Behavioural biologist Dr Sandra Düpjan is part of a cross-border project to analyse pig sounds. The researchers wanted to find out whether and how pigs use different sounds to express their state of mind. They used artificial intelligence to analyse the data. Together, the project partners developed an algorithm that classifies the pig sounds. The algorithm was applied to recordings from conventional, organic and free-range farms in a recently published documentary. Sandra Düpjan presents her research on self-monitoring in pigs, while Steffen Maak analysed the meat quality in the various husbandry systems.
The 74-minute report will be broadcast on 10 September at 0.05 a.m. on NDR and is already available in the ARD media library here (in German).
The documentary was accompanied by radio interviews for Radio Eins vom rbb and WDR 5 (both in German), among others.
