What is the FBN?
The FBN is a research institute.
FBN stands for: Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology.
The FBN is not affiliated with any university.
The institute decides for itself what research to carry out.
Who works at the FBN?
Around 300 people work at the FBN.
These include:
- Researchers, such as biologists or vets
- People who support the researchers (for example, with animals, technology or computers)
- Administrative staff
There are also many students working at the FBN.
They are writing their final-year dissertation
or doing a work placement in the laboratory or office.
What do we research?
How can we manage farm animals effectively?
Whilst protecting the environment?
That is what we research at the FBN.
We develop new ideas for animal husbandry.
In other words, for the future.
We investigate:
- How do animals’ bodies function?
- How do animals behave?
- How do animals interact with their environment?
We also look at:
- How do animals adapt to their environment?
- What happens inside the animals’ bodies?
This is how we uncover new research findings.
These help us to:
- keep the animals healthy
- improve animal welfare
- make better use of resources (such as feed and water)
- protect nature
Our aim is: a form of agriculture that is good for animals, people and the environment.
Who funds the FBN?
The FBN needs funding for its research.
The funding comes from:
- the government (federal and state)
- research organisations
- the European Union
- industry
The FBN only receives government funding if it performs well.
The research must:
- be important to many people
- also be useful to other researchers around the world
