Working at FBN

Holiday destination with surprisingly quick accessibility

For the next conference, for visiting friends and family far away or even if a last-minute city trip has been planned – the metropolises of Hamburg, Berlin and Szczecin (Poland) can be reached by direct motorway connections after two hours of driving. Several ferries leave for Denmark and Sweden through the ferry port of Rostock.

Endless sandy beaches invite you to relax after work. The Hanse Sail, historical Hanseatic towns and parkland landscapes, festivals like the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, artists' colonies – culturally speaking, there is something interesting to be discovered in the vicinity as per each person's liking and for every age.

But also the options for physical activities are diverse: Going to work by bicycle on a well-built network of bicycle lanes, kiting or surfing on the beach, riding through the yellow rapeseed fields during spring, golfing, participation in many running events, and many more – there will always be an opportunity, whether individually or together with others.

Flexible research connected with safe working conditions of the public service

Our institute is part of a broad-based interdisciplinary scientific network. The collective agreement of the Länder are applicable for us, which allows our employees to benefit from the good working conditions of the public service:

  • good payment and clear conditions for employment through collective bargaining coverage
  • an additional occupational pension scheme
  • an entitlement to annual holidays equivalent to 30 days
  • regulations for continued remuneration in case of illness complement the general statutory social protection of workers in Germany with regard to sickness, unemployment, long-term care, pension and occupational safety

All beginnings are difficult

That is why we provide new employees with comprehensive support to make their successful start at FBN as simple as possible.

This includes assistance with finding a place to live and childcare as well as completing administrative tasks.

Career and family

The Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) assists employees with balancing life, family and their career. This is accomplished through an institute culture that takes various interests depending on family and the respective phase of life into account, and encompasses concrete measures to improve balance:

  • family-conscious personnel management (flexible working hours, taking time missed for family reasons into account)
  • mission statement for life, family and career balance (PDF)
  • Gender Equality Plan of the FBN (PDF)
  • childcare support measures (cooperation agreement with the local day care centre, parent/child offices)
  • information on issues related to phases of life (parent benefits, child benefits, nursing, pension)

Health management

The health of all employees at the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) is important to us. We define health as the overall state of physical, mental and social wellbeing.

The health management goals listed here are established in the “Operating Agreement on Operational Health Management of the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) Dummerstorf” ratified by the Management Board and Staff Council on 1 June 2015:

  •     anchoring health as a value in the institute culture and the actions of all
  •     maintaining and improving the working capacity, motivation and satisfaction of all employees
  •     promoting social interaction for the benefit of the FBN

Special emphasis is placed on preventive measures here, such as:

  • the design and expansion of health promotion processes and ambient conditions in the workplace
  • promoting healthy behaviour by the employees and strengthening personal resources
  • maintaining the working capacity of employees, in particular regarding workplace changes and demographic trends
  • implementation and continuous improvement of operational integration management with the goal of overcoming an inability to work and preventing recurrence
  • promoting identification with the FBN
